My Information Report about Land Snails

For WIT, we are learning about invertebrate that we have caught in our Frankley School Bush.  I chose to write about the snail because we caught heaps.

 Land Snails

Fun fact -   Did you know that land snails rip their food into tiny pieces with their tongue-like organ called a radula?

Diet
Land snails mostly eat flowers but sometimes they do eat stems and leaves or any type of plants.

Habitat
Land snails live in moist leaf litter on the forest floor, and are detritivores – they feed on the microorganisms that breakdown plants. Tree-living species primarily graze on organisms that grow on leaf surfaces, rather than eating the leaves.

Appearance
Land snails have a shell on the outside and have a muscular foot that they use to move around. They usually have 2 pairs of tentacles and eyes at the top.  Snails lose moisture quickly from their body out in the sun but need to be in shade.  That is why they come out at night.

Did you know that high numbers of snails can destroy crops in vegetable gardens?
